Hair is a multilayered and complex biological structure formed by keratin molecules tightly bound to each other, growing from the skin that covers the skull.
• 1. Hair Root
The hair grows from the hair root. The hair root is embedded in the fat layer of the scalp. The bottom portion of the root is called “the hair bulb”, where the melanocyte cells that give the hair its color, are mainly located. At the base of the hair bulb is the dermal papilla, a ball of capillaries vital for the nourishment and growth of the hair. Each hair root is surrounded by two sheaths, an inner and an outer sheath. Around the root, sebaceous glands are attached producing the natural lubricant of the hair, called sebum.
• 2. Hair Shaft
The part of the hair that is visible above the scalp is called “the hair shaft”. It consists of keratinized dead cells, binding substances and water. |
